Alaska

This morning my beloved cat Alaska unexpectedly passed away...

We adopted Alaska from the RSPCA on January 15th 2016 at the age of 10. She wasn't what most people would call a beautiful cat - she had no ears and only 4 teeth, she was very skinny but had a lot of fluff that made her look kind of bedraggled and she mostly just looked like a grumpy old cat... She'd been overlooked by so many people at the RSPCA because there were so many other cats that all looked 'normal', but when we visited, the other cats showed no interest in us while Alaska walked straight up to us and rubbed herself against my leg and I knew there and then that she was the one for us. They say that you don't choose your pets, they choose you, and that's definitely what Alaska did...

I had hoped that Alaska would be in our lives for a long time, but I also knew that adopting an older cat who hadn't had an overly great life beforehand meant that there was a good chance she wouldn't be with us for too many years... She passed sometime during the night last night, and all I can do is hope that it was peaceful for her and that she wasn't in pain...

I'd like to believe that she did at least have a good life for the last year, that she knew she was loved and she never had to worry about where the next meal was coming from as she had had to do for the previous 10 years... I don't know if she knew she was loved or if she was happier - she spent the majority of her time sleeping in whatever hiding spot she could find, only coming out for food and occasionally in the evenings where she would sit on my lap and sometimes allow me to give her pats... She was definitely a character, and although she was never a family oriented cat, preferring to hide away and sleep, she taught us a lot and she will be dearly missed by us all...

R.I.P beautiful girl, I didn't get to share as much of your life with you as I'd hoped, but you have left a huge mark on my heart and you will never be forgotten xx
